How to Get There:
Epupa Camp lies on the banks of the Kunene River
in the Kunene Region, of which the northern part
was known as Kaokoland. From Opuwo take the DR
3700 gravel road north. Epupa is about 180
km or three-hour's driving from Opuwo. It is
scenic road, made slow by the many dry river
beds, herds of farm animals and the nomadic
Himba you pass. After 100 km you reach
Okongwati. On arrival at Epupa, follow the signs
for Epupa Camp as it winds through the
picturesque village. We are about 800 meters
upstream from the main falls. A 4x4 vehicle is
recommended, especially during the rainy season.
Ruacana Road What used to be
a road only for the most daring and adventurous,
taking an entire day of gruelling offroading and
more likely than not a couple of stops to
replace your shredded tyres, has recently gotten
a bit of a face lift. Completed at the end of
2017, a new dirt road has been scraped between
Epupa and the Kunene River Lodge and the 90km
journey can now be completed smoothly
(comparatively) in about three hours (although
we would recommend budgeting 5 hours to enjoy
the scenery and have a picnic). This facilitates
a much better round trip and can make the
distance travelled to this isolated part of
Namibia all the more worthwhile as you can now
diversify your trip between the arid beauty of
the Epupa area and the lush majesty of the
Ruacana area. For those diehard offroaders to
whom this may seem a piece of tragic news, do
not be disheartened, much of the old track
remains alongside the new road and can still be
traversed for a thrilling ride. Please note
though that in the rainy season between December
and April, the rivers from the Namibian side
into the Kunene are in full flow and the road is
completely impassable and we would advise
strongly that the road is not attempted during
this time.
